Homemade Sausage Gravy

Ingredients

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk warmed
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Brown the Sausage In a skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage completely. Do not drain the grease.
  • Sprinkle flour over the sausage and stir well. Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly to cook out the raw flour taste.
  • Slowly pour in the warmed milk, about 1/2 cup at a time, stirring after each addition until the mixture is smooth.
  • Once all milk is added, reduce heat to medium-low. Let the gravy simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring often, until thick and creamy.
  • Add black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of milk. If it is too thin, continue to simmer for a few more minutes.
