Grandma’s Skillet Sausage & Cabbage

Ingredients

  • 1 lb smoked sausage, kielbasa or beef sausage sliced
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper chopped
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 1 small head cabbage cleaned and chopped
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • Seasonings:
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Brown the Sausage Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add a small amount of sausage grease or oil if needed. Add sliced sausage and cook until nicely browned on both sides.
  • Sauté Aromatics Stir in bell pepper and onion. Cook for about 3 minutes until softened.
  • Add Cabbage Add cabbage and pour in 1/4 cup water. Stir everything together until well mixed.
  • Season Season with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, seasoning salt, and paprika. Add butter, sugar, and hot sauce. Stir to coat evenly.
  • Steam and Simmer Cover with a lid and let cook 5–10 minutes, stirring once or twice, until cabbage is tender and flavors are blended.
  • Final Touch Taste and adjust seasoning or hot sauce if needed.
